Hexaon Energy announced it has received a U.S. Department of Energy award to accelerate the development of geothermal energy in Washington's Wind River Valley.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Oct. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Hexagon Energy, an independent energy development company that has developed and sold over 3 GW of energy projects across the United States, announced it has received a U.S. Department of Energy award to accelerate the development of geothermal energy in Washington's Wind River Valley.

"Washington contains one of the most significant untapped geothermal resources in the U.S.," said Drew Price, President and Chief Development Officer of Hexagon Energy. "This area has been the subject of study for decades, and we are honored to be selected to further explore this resource with support from the Department of Energy."

This award will support Hexagon's execution of a targeted exploratory drilling initiative to capture crucial subsurface insights in Washington's Wind River Valley, aiming to evaluate and substantiate this high-potential site for both conventional hydrothermal and enhanced geothermal systems.

"For decades, geothermal in the Washington Cascades has been studied, but drilling a full-depth characterization well has remained out of reach," said Adam Ventre, Vice President of Geothermal Development at Hexagon Energy. "This public-private partnership with the Department of Energy will help unlock the geothermal potential of the Cascades, and it comes at a pressing time. Washington has set ambitious climate goals for 2030, just as the Northwest is projected to face a resource adequacy gap of roughly 9 GW. Firm, clean, around-the-clock power will be essential to meeting both."

Through this Federal Funding, Hexagon Energy, along with the other award recipients, will further explore and confirm prospective regions across the United States for their ability to deliver clean, reliable, and around-the-clock power. In addition, the data generated by this initiative will be shared publicly via the Department of Energy's Geothermal Data Repository, providing crucial subsurface data to industry stakeholders, ultimately supporting the ongoing advancement of geothermal development.
