Project Developer

POSITION SUMMARY

Hexagon Energy, a renewable energy development company specializing in large-scale solar and battery energy storage projects, is seeking a Project Developer to support its renewable energy development efforts. The Project Developer leads all aspects of the development process from site acquisition through commercial operation.

Candidates must be process and results-oriented, highly organized, and passionate about the type of work Hexagon is doing. An ideal candidate will:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively/collaboratively in dynamic, cross-functional teams and influence others through work ethic and positive attitude to accomplish stretch goals

  • An exceptional ability to balance hard skills (timelines, site plans, engineering

studies, legal compliance, local planning codes, etc) with soft skills, translating

complex technical realities into terms appropriate for any given audience

  • Courage to talk with people different from yourself, who may hold opinions

different from yours; must be comfortable in “cross partisan” contexts

  • Working knowledge and technical understanding of renewable energy, energy markets, and financial models is preferred; working knowledge of real estate and sales is a plus

  • Client-facing and deal negotiation experience, with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including empathy, intuition, listening, and narrative-building

  • High level of self-awareness and humility, with excitement about confronting uncomfortable situations or new challenges

  • Strong communication skills, written, spoken, and visual, and comfort with public speaking to large audiences

  • Excellent spatial awareness and ability to read, interpret, and produce maps,

narratives, and plans for a variety of situations

  • Ability to think and make decisions on the spot, balancing tradeoffs and reducing

    risk to the project

  • Ability to lead teams—both internal and external—in the development of project

    materials, timelines, and deliverables

  • Intellectual agility and curiosity, superb analytical skills (problem-solving is your default mode)

  • Ability to prioritize work, recognizing opportunity costs to each decision; there is

more to do than can be done, so what is most important and valuable?

  • Not afraid to ask questions or ask for help when needed

  • Able to keep the end goal in mind and prioritize actions to that end; not distracted

    by unnecessary tasks

Ideal candidates will have at a minimum 2-5+ years of relevant industry experience with a strong preference for renewable energy development (real estate or infrastructure development, project finance, management consulting, or strong operational leadership experience is a plus).

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with Project Management team using Asana, Salesforce, or similar software to communicate your work and the status of your projects

  • Utilize GIS and database tools to identify project opportunities and generate landowner outreach materials

  • Generate and negotiate lease and option agreements, working with internal and external counsel

  • Manage project interconnection process with the Development Engineering team

  • Lead the local project permitting process, including preparing applications, meeting with local officials, and making presentations to local planning boards and other stakeholders

  • Select and manage consultants to support permitting efforts, including local legal,

    engineering, and environmental experts

  • Manage environmental review of projects in conjunction with the Development Engineering team

  • Assist the Finance team with the evaluation of project taxes and lead abatement negotiations

  • Lead due diligence in support of project financing and sales

  • Travel requirement – up to 50%, often on short notice

SKILLS

  • Highly organized

  • Strong research and writing skills

  • Broad technical understanding of industry and major industry drivers

  • Communication skills-ability to converse with laymen, elected officials, and experts with equal ease

  • Courage to address difficult items first rather than burying them

  • “Jack of all trades”

  • Manage risk: recognize, identify, and resolve threats to your project in a timely fashion

  • Comfort with speaking to large audiences and the press

EDUCATION & ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants with at least a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Planning, Environmental Science or Engineering are preferred. Backgrounds in construction, the press, the humanities, or municipal government are also favored.
