Transmission Planning Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY

Hexagon Energy, a renewable energy project development company specializing in solar and battery energy storage projects, is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to support engineering operations. This position will have a lead role in Hexagon’s Transmission Prospecting campaigns. It will work closely with internal stakeholders from the engineering, project development, and Finance teams to identify potential renewable sites, help define prospecting strategy, and perform transmission analysis for Hexagon’s Projects.

Candidates must be process and results-oriented, highly organized, and passionate about the work Hexagon is doing. An ideal candidate should embody the following attributes:

  • Ability to work well as a sole contributor and as part of a team

  • Exhibit knowledge and understanding of T&D protective relay schemes

  • Remain informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments

  • Lead or participate in project study meetings

Ideal candidates will have 2+ years of relevant experience in transmission planning.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform power system analysis, including power flow, short circuit, and stability, using industry tools

  • Prepare interconnection applications and associated documentation for projects across various ISO/RTO regions

  • Support the development and validation of models for generation and load interconnection projects

  • Analyze complex transmission systems at numerous voltage levels to identify congestion reliability issues and optimize mitigations

  • Assist project developers in the evaluation of potential project sites by determining project feasibility and potential network upgrades and cost

  • Review and summarize the various RTO/ISO interconnection tariffs, costs, and timelines

  • Collaborate externally with 3rd party consultants, utility and ISO engineers, and other industry professionals to advance Hexagon's projects and manage varied deliverables

  • Review and evaluate utility study deliverables methodology and guide the development team on project changes and opportunities to leverage available capacity

  • Track changes to current and evolving queued projects

     

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in power-system simulation software such as PSSE, PSLF, TARA, or PSCAD

  • Fundamental understanding of electric power systems and renewable energy

  • Experience in NERC/FERC regional standards and compliance is a plus

  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Suite

  • Demonstrates ability to work autonomously in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • Well-organized self-starter with a genuine drive for success and executing both short- and longer-term strategic goals

EDUCATION & ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants with at least a bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering are strongly preferred.

LOCATION

This position is based at Hexagon’s headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia. Remote or flexible work arrangements are negotiable for qualified candidates.
