Controller

POSITION SUMMARY

Hexagon Energy, a renewable energy project development company specializing in solar and battery energy storage projects, is seeking a Controller to support its financial and administrative operations. The Controller will be responsible for daily accounting and reporting activities. This position reports to the Chief Commercial Officer and will work closely with our bookkeeper, as well as our external tax consultant and public accounting firm.

Ideal candidates will have 5+ years of experience in a public or managerial accounting position.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise, coach, and develop direct reports

  • Manage the General Accounting function

  • Own the month-end and year-end close processes with stated deadlines

  • Ensure maintenance of and continuous improvement of internal controls and business processes

  • Prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders

  • Actively participate in the development of cost-to-complete reviews of projects

  • Prepare and analyze monthly percentage to completion reporting

  • Manage journal entries, accruals, etc. and reconcile accounts for monthly closing

  • Own and be the point of contact for the Auditors and Tax Advisors in the completion of the annual audit and preparation of state and federal tax returns

  • Oversee the processing of semi-monthly payroll by third-party provider

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and tax regulatory requirements

  • Ensure timeliness of all tax filings, including annual federal and state filings, quarterly filings, annual extensions, and estimates

  • Assist senior management with business improvement, including improvement in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

  • Treasury and Cash Management functions, including (i) originating wire and ACH payments, (ii) managing ACH Fraud Control and Positive Pay apps(iii) management of surety lines, and (iv) interfacing with Lenders and Surety Brokers and Underwriters

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability

  • Experience with general ledger, job costing, and percentage of completion accounting

  • Working knowledge of real estate development, construction, and renewable energy is a plus

  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial close, reporting, tax compliance, including multi state reporting, etc.)

  • Significant experience with QuickBooks Online accounting software

  • Excellent computer skills, including experience with MS Excel and Microsoft Power Bl

  • Software implementation and upgrades is a plus

  • Well-organized, having the ability to prioritize multiple competing demands

  • Strong understanding of GAAP (including non-controlling interest and hypothetical liquidation at book value (HLBV) accounting and corresponding reporting requirements

  • Development experience preferred (real estate or renewable energy)

  • Experience with Asana (or other project management software)

  • Intermediate to Advanced Excel skills

EDUCATION & ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants with at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, and business administration with an emphasis in accounting. Licensed CPA or M.S. Accounting strongly preferred.

LOCATION

This position is based at Hexagon’s headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia. Remote or flexible work arrangements are negotiable for qualified candidates.
